San Francisco Shopping Trip!

I love San Francisco… and the buzz of the city.  But even more then that I love to shop.  I just got back from a great long weekend with my boyfriend and I can’t get the Westfield San Francisco City Center out of my mind.  With six levels and over 200 stores to choose from, I’m actually surprised I didn’t get lost and miss my flight 🙂  When you walk in and see the round-a-bout escalators, you have to kink your neck a little to look up but it takes your breath away.  The minute you think you have seen everything, like every mall there seems to be an aisle you didn’t even know existed.  Trust me you will have a blast and get in your exercise for the day when shopping at the Westfield.

At the main hub for Cable Cars the  elaborate Westfield building sits and high end shops draw you in.  Of course I had to stop at the staples…Guess, Express, Urban Outfitters and this trip the Vans store pleasantly surprised me.  I have been wanting a pair of Toms for a while now but was wishy washy because they are pricy and I hear the soles wear out quickly.  This led me into the Vans store where I discovered the cutest pair of grey Vans which weren’t displayed where you would think they would be!  Lady’s and Gent’s don’t always dismiss the hanging shoe rack…you may find gold.

While much more was purchases on this exciting San Francisco shopping trip I would be here forever going over every great item.   Now that I am back in the OC I am tasked with cleaning out the closet to make space for my new clothing.  I will always remember our S.F. shopping day and the intense packing that I went along with a great vacation!

On-location in Laguna Beach

As an on-location stylist I have the opportunity to meet new people and work in new places all of the time.  This past weekend I had the pleasure of working in Laguna Beach.  I booked a wonderful bride from Canada that was here celebrating her big day with her family.  They rented an incredible house in Laguna Beach on the top a hill that over looked Laguna and parts of Dana Point.  It was a beautiful day for a wedding and the bride and bridesmaid looked amazing…photos to come!

Portion Control

It has been two weeks since I have started with a personal trainer and instead of feeling better, I am sore and hungry lol.  One thing I have noticed to be true is smaller portions, more often is working.  Even though I feel like I am constantly eating I’m never uncomfortably full.

So how do you portion control when everything in American is made in portions for four people instead of one?  My little trick is small containers, salad plates and cups instead of bowls.  When I’m packing my lunch I use the smallest container I can find, and if your really paying attention you’ll notice that even that holds a lot.  I went to pack some cottage cheese for lunch and two scoops later I was looking at the container half full going…this is to much!

Salad plates are a perfect tool to keeping your portioning down because you have half the space of a normal plate.  Once you get used to the smaller portion I would recommend taking this one step further and make it so that your food doesn’t touch on the plate…sounds funny but you’ll notice the portion decreases even more once your not piling it on.

Lastly, used a cup as your bowl.  You’ll notice on most cereals, ice cream and bowl used products a serving size is half/full cup.  By using a cup to eat these produces it makes enjoying them easier!

Keep in mind you have to still put healthy items in these portion control containers.  But these tricks are helping me so hopefully they can aid with your goals 🙂

Summer Dresses Continued….

Everyone loves a summer dress…they are cute, comfortable and easy to accessorize.  So why not continue wearing your summer dressed in the winter?  I went through my closet and found some great ways to dress up my summer dresses and make them winter wear friendly.

Add a high boot – not only are high boots great for keeping your legs warm but they can add a little kick that will make your summer look more winter.

Add a jacket or half sweater – Adding a jacket or half sweater can keep your shoulders warm and gives you the opportunity to add some color to the mix.  You can spice up a cute sun dress without adding all the accessories, some jackets have the buttons and zippers to do it for you.  www.bubbleroom.com

Add some leggings – When in dough add leggings.  They come in so many colors and prints now that you can find any style that will compliment a cute summer dress.  I have found the best selection at Forever 2.  Yes if you are a mature women you may feel a little silly surrounded but teens but you will not regret the visit with all the options.

I have already gone through my closet in preparation for the summer months.  It’s always a good idea to keep these simple tips in mind when your shopping in the summer months.  Making your wardrobe have a longer life span can only help your pocket books bottom line 🙂

PS. A scarf is always an awesome winter choice as well!

All TV, Internet TV or No TV

I recently came across a woman that didn’t own a TV.  I was shocked that in 2011 where people are putting TV’s in unique places like bathrooms, here was a woman that didn’t even own a TV, not one!  My initial though was, what does she do with her time?  Working out, working, going out, playing sports, reading maybe even spending time with pets or a significant other…While she does enjoy all of these facets of life the real answer was her computer.  Between Netflix, Hulu and individual TV show sites you can find anything that is on TV at your finger tip, with a monthly price starting at $00!

TV vs. Internet

So how is it that I pay $200 a month for Cable and Internet?  So I started doing some research.

Hulu is completely free; yes I know you already knew that but still.  You can find most anything that was on cable TV through Hulu.  Not the most recent episodes though and not all shows.  I am an avid Man vs. Food watcher and Hulu didn’t have it.  But Hulu does have the option to purchase Hulu Plus (starting at $7.99) and watch TV now with up to date episodes and newer movie.  Bonus: you can use Hulu Plus on your smart phone, tablets, gaming systems, Blue Ray players and of course your computer.

Everyone Knows Netflix, you can start at $7.99 as well but I can say form experience it’s great until you can’t find what you want to watch on-line.  For $7.99 you receive the one DVD in the mail at a time and you have unlimited downloads.  The bummer is Netflix is limited on the movies you can download when it comes to new releases.  They have really worked on increasing the amount TV shows that they offer which is great!

If you can’t find what you are looking for on either of these avenues you can always turn to the direct site.  I unfortunately missed an episode of “The Vampire Diaries” and couldn’t find it anywhere…until I looked on the show website and sure enough there was the episode I missed!  Some head phone, no commercials and a half hour later I was caught up on my mystical teenage drama J

So why do I continue to pay for Cable when I am already paying to the internet?  Convenience and variety.  Sometime I just want to flip through channels and stop at the random shows or old movies that I would have never thought to search for.  Not to mention I live with a wonderfully crazy sports fan who couldn’t survive without his Sports Center and all the ESPN channels.

Just depends on what your preferences are!

Home Remedies

With modern technology we find ourselves constantly relying on the newest and recommended best products to take care of our everyday needs.  Well I would like to take a minute and reflect back to some home remedies that I have heard and experienced over the years…

Baking Soda Bath – We have all experiences unexpected sunburns or an accidental burn form an iron.  Before burn cream, people used to put baking soda in warm bath water to sooth the sting from burns.  I have unfortunately had to use this remedy on myself and it really works.

Onions can help kick your cold! – There was a point in my life I felt as though getting a cold was an every other week event.  Finally a friend approached me with a home remedy that at first I thought was odd but then warmed up to reality that it works.  When you feel as though you are coming down with a cold cut an onion and place one half by your bed and the other across the room.  Not only does the smell of the onion keep your sinuses clear, (making it easier to rest) there is something about the onion that as it dries it absorbs bacteria in the air.  Don’t believe me try it, you will find you get better quicker!

Toothpaste Removes Blemishes – One day I was visiting my grandma and happen to have a very uncomfortable and deep pimple on my face.  She drug me to the bathroom before going to bed and smothered toothpaste all over the blemish.  I woke up in the morning to have the pimple half the size it was from the night before. WHAT! One more night and it was completely gone without spending any money on expensive products or painfully trying to rip it off my face.

Garlic as a Natural Antibiotic – With all the medical hype about not over using antibiotic because of your body building up a tolerance, why not start helping yourself on a daily basis?  Garlic can be used for more than just repulsing people with bad breath, including it into your daily vitamins can help build up your natural immunities.

Frozen Waffles for Teething Babies – I recently asked my Facebook follower for their own home remedies and Patricia was nice enough to include a mother’s perspective.  Apparently frozen waffles can give teething babies relief with a cold and soft texture.

Summer No No’s

With the summer here and the weather encouraging everyone to go outside, I wanted to share some things to avoid during the summer months that seem to reoccur every year.  While they make people watching interesting and encourage pool side gossip, the following are my top five NO NO’s…

Avoid Sunburns – Everyone knows that sun burns are not the best for your skin.  Sun burns dry out your skin, hurt and pealing isn’t the best look with a crop top shirt.  Adding an everyday lotion with an SPF can dramatically help with the unwanted sun burns and funky tan lines. Nivea Natural Tone Lotion

Avoid Sunglass Tans – Everyone loves their designer shades but let’s FACE it, sunglass tans are not attractive and are very hard to cover up.  When you plan on spending a little time in the sun make sure to re-enforce your makeup with a good SPF face lotion (the SPF in your make-up is not enough). I have tried many and unfortunately for myself I have very sensitive skin.  But Bobby Brown finally came through for me with his Protective Face Lotion.  If you anticipate a long day in the sun definitely wear a good facial sun screen and don’t forget your hat.

Avoid Frizzy Hair – With hot weather and the constant in and out of the pool or ocean, your hair can take a beating.  Carry a leave in conditioner with you on beach and pool days; I have had the best result with AG conditioning mist.  Using a reconstructive conditioner a few times a month can make a huge difference in the health of your hair.   I highly recommend K-Pak Deep Penetrating Reconstructor, it makes my hair feel like silk!  Lastly its summer, stay away from your blow dryer when you have the chance.  With constant wear and tear form the weather your hair will need a break from the heat!

Avoid Orange Fake Tans – I know that spray tanning is a great way to keep a summer glow and decrease the UV exposure to your skin, but we all know that there is a difference between summer glow and orange alien glow.  For the everyday I would recommend Jergens Natural Glow Revitalizing Daily Moisturizer.  This gives you subtle color and makes your skin feel great.  I am still an old fashion tanning bed girl and frequently visit Unique Tan in Mission Viejo.  I know they offer spray tanning and I have had friend come out looking great, but the fear of Orange glow keeps me away.

Avoid Make-up Mistakes – In the summer the natural look prevails!  Keep away from caking on the make-up and at all time wear waterproof mascara, you never know when someone will be throwing you in the water unexpectedly.  A little bronzer on the cheeks, a shimmery lip gloss and you will be ready to rock your summer sun dresses. While I am not a fan of the MAC foundations, I have to give it to them on their bronzers and colors they have launched for the summer!

Its official…the new Food Plate has replaced the Food Pyramid.  But what does this really mean to the everyday person?  Nothing really!  For most people when you are taught the food pyramid in grade school it’s more to teach you nutritional balance, start you on the path of keeping your body health.  Yet most people aren’t constantly referring to the Pyramid for guidance as they get older.  Not to mention that everyone’s body is different and needs a different nutritional balance to maintain personal preferences.  I for one think the new Food Plate will be easier to use and understand for the everyday person.  It’s more visually recognizable being that we are looking at a plate when we eat most of our meals (minus fast foods).  Really though the Food Plate is commons since and like everything, to make it successful there has to be tips to understanding what makes this new system better.

 

10 Tips

As we watch this new wave of nutritional trends emerge I’m interested to see how restaurants and fast food establishments integrate the new Food Plate into their menus!  We all saw how the calorie counts caught on like wild fire.  If they were smart they would dedicate one item to the new Food Plate diagram and keep people thinking dining out can still meet dieting needs.

Pool Side Hair Styles

Taking care of your hair while enjoying the sun is very important but style can’t be thrown out the window either.  After years of experience and looking at a lot of hair styles I have found a few styles that are functional and pool side appealing.

1)      The Side Bun – The great thing about the side bun is that it can be messy cute.  It also shows that you have hair even though it’s pulled back.  While this seems like a funny comment, you would be surprised how boyish slicking your hair straight back can be, and boyish isn’t sexy!

2)      French Twist – For those who are not really into getting your hair wet, the French Twist is a perfect solution.  It adds a little elegance to a classy bathing suit or you can choose to have hair come out the top for a slightly funkier look.

3)      Pigtails (don’t forget the hat!) –  Pigtails are a classic, simple way to look a little younger and keep your hair out of your face.  Be careful, you don’t want to look like your trying to be 15 again!  Try pairing this classic style with a cute hat for a more youthful but sophisticated look

4)      Braids – Any type of braid will work but the French braid you can’t go wrong with.  They are one of the easier braids to do on yourself and even messy they look cute.  A trend that has made its way back on the scene is the headband French braid…a little hippy looking but leave out the forehead band and you will be styling.

I have to say my favorite would be the messy bun.  It’s easy and can be redone throughout the day.  Whatever your preference if you’re not wearing a hat do not forget the sunscreen because scalp burns are no fun!

Take Care of Your Pool Hair

With the weather getting better and Memorial Day weekend around the corner the pool and beach are looking more and more appealing.  What’s not appealing is the damaged hair that comes with playing in the water to much. So here are a few tips that I recommend trying through your summer fun;

1)      Conditioner is your friend! – If you’re going to be spending the day in an out of the water put conditioner in your hair and put it up.   Whether you rock a braid or a bun, a thick coating of conditioner will help protect your hair from chlorine and salt, which dry out your hair.  If you like more of the wet hair down look bring a spray bottle with a mixture of water and leave in conditioner with you.  Use every time before getting in the water to keep your hair moisturized.

2)      Ready… Set… Shampoo! – I know after a long day in the sun and playing in the water taking a shower may be the last think on your mind, but do it!  Hair is very porous so not only are you drying it out all day, if you don’t wash out the hair cuticle and refresh your hair with moisture it’s going to feel dry and brittle.  Washing also helps keeps blonds form looking green and colored hair form looking dull. (I recommend Joico’s KPak Sun Therapy –  http://joico.com/products/haircare/kpak-sun-therapy)

3)      Protective Cap?! – While I would never ware one just because I’m not a professional swimmer they do help reduce the amount of exposure your hair receives.  But let’s be real, you’re more likely not to go in the water then use one!

4)      Don’t be afraid of the scissors! – After a long summer of heat, wind, sand and water don’t be afraid to get a trim and start fresh for the winter.  Taking the ends off will make your hair grow and keep it looking healthy.  Not to mention getting your hair cut keeps you up to date with the current styles!

 

While caring for your hair this summer is very important, I haven’t ignored my feminine side that wants to look good at the pool too.
